Abstract: This study examined the complex three-way interactions that take place when a parent and child share a text. It endeavoured to tease out the particular variables in this interaction that facilitate the child’s later reading ability. As part of this, the study also investigated parent styles in such book reading episodes and how these changed from when the child was a dependent reader to when the child was an independent reader, i.e. the transition period from the end of the child’s preschool year to the end of the first year of primary school – a period neglected by researchers in early literacy.

Abstract: This volume of Directions: Journal of Educational Studies brings to readers the strategic plans for education of four small islands states in the Pacific.Niue, Nauru, Tokelau and Tuvalu.and an introductory chapter by Dr Helen Tavola, Social Policy Advisor for the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS). The Forum Basic Education Action Plan (FBEAP, now the Pacific Education Framework, PEDF) is a regional plan for education and the Pacific Initiatives for the Delivery of basic Education (PRIDE) Project is the main vehicle of implementation of FBEAP. Assisting counties with education planning has been a key part of the work of PRIDE. Dr Tavola.s chapter elaborates on the development of FBEAP and PRIDE and highlights the role education strategic plans play in strengthening the capacity of each Ministry of Education to plan and deliver quality basic education. The chapter focuses on the unique challenges faced by small island states in addressing the capacity constraints in implementing the FBEAP/PEDF and their national educations strategic plans. The editors are very grateful to the Directors of Education in Nauru, Niue, Tokelau and Tuvalu for permission to print their plans in this volume.

Abstract: Algebra is frequently introduced with variables representing objects such as a for apples and b for bananas. The name ‘fruit salad algebra’ originates from this common introductory teaching strategy, which has been used for a long time by many teachers, both experienced and newly appointed, in an effort to foster the important real world links. There is strong evidence that traditional algebra leaves students confused. We, the teachers of algebra, need a change. Algebra must be introduced in a manner which will enhance student capability to build on their knowledge when more advanced topics are reached. In the Fiji context this means the textbook must surely be modified to cater for the new ideas in preference to the ‘fruit salad’ approach to the teaching of algebra.
