| Title: Reading and writing development in the early years (0-6 years) : the role of the adult Author: Campbell, Robin Subject: | Children|Books and reading Reading|Parent participation | Volume: Directions: Journal of Educational Studies no.32, vol.17, no.1, 1995 Collation: p. 38-53 ; Abstract: The role of the adult as a support for children’s literacy development is of considerable importance. Recently Frank Smith (1992) indicated that ‘ethods can never ensure that children learn to read. Children must learn from people’. That quote encapsulated, very neatly, the key role of adults. Those adults, often parents at home and teachers at school, will provide and then support children in a variety of literacy activities, which serves to facilitate the children in their literacy development (Campbell 1990). What are some of those literacy activities – especially in the early years? And how do the adults at home, in pre-school playgroups, in nursery classrooms and infant school classrooms use the literacy activities to support the children’s learning? There are, of course, many different opportunities for children to engage with literacy. However, six particular activities will beemphasised in this article. They are story reading, using environmental print, momentary engagements with print, shared book experience, shared reading and opportunities for writing.

| Title: Relating formal instruction to prior knowledge : the case of decimal fractions Author: Sharma, Sashi Subject: | Fractions|Study and teaching (Elementary)|Fiji Decimal fractions|Study and teaching (Elementary)|Fiji | Volume: Directions: Journal of Educational Studies no.34, vol.18, no.1, 1996 Collation: p. 57-71 ; Abstract: This paper is part of a study that arose from a concern about children’s difficulties with decimal numbers and the role of calculators. The study was designed to gain information on how calculators affect children’s understanding of decimal numbers in decimal concepts, computations, estimation and problem-solving. Data from interviews and other sources indicated that children generated links with their whole number and fraction ideas while working with decimals. This paper discusses research into how prior whole number and fraction knowledge influences the learning of decimals, and provides evidence to support this view. The paper concludes with some suggestions for teachers and curriculum developers in Fiji.

| Title: Re-placing Oceania roots in our teacher education programmes : a critical appraisal of the roles of indigenous educational ideas Author: Teaero, Teweiariki Subject: | Pacific Islanders|Education Teachers|Training of|Oceania Educational anthropology|Oceania | Volume: Directions: Journal of Educational Studies no.41, vol.21, no.2, 1999 Collation: p. 24-45 ; Abstract: The majority of our teacher education programmes in Oceania are based largely on western models. However, teachers who graduate from these training institutions inevitably find themselves teaching in situations where indigenous forms and notions of education exist. Moreover, these teachers were products of primary and secondary education systems that disregarded indigenous forms of education, thereby compounding the problem. Focussing on indigenous thought processes rather than bodies of knowledge, this paper discusses the constraints and the prospects pertaining to the study of indigenous education in Oceania. It is argued that teacher education programmes must include systematic studies of indigenous philosophies and processes of education. A thorough grounding in this and exogenous philosophies of education would provide a stronger and more realistic foundation for teachers to practise their profession more effectively in the future in complementary ways that are firmly grounded in local realities.
