Abstract: The authors describe how and why PNG .s language policy making is in its infancy. However, already it is clear that the government wants it to reflect a focus on social issues. The 1995 National Educational reform strongly recommended the use of vernacular languages in elementary schools, and a lot of progress has been made in this area.
